Cumin

Cumin comes from the plant Cuminum cyminum L. which is native to Syria. Over time it has spread throughout the Mediterranean basin and today it can be found practically in all the Arab countries. Like fennel ones, cumin seeds are not real seeds but they are fruits which are called achenes which characteristic is to have an external hard shell and each containing a single seed. Cumin has carminative and digestive properties and is a good natural remedy against abdominal swelling and colic. An excellent herbal tea to drink at the end of a meal to promote digestion, which is also very useful against coughing, can be prepared with the seeds of this precious spice, a pinch of fennel and a little mint.
